Recovering Evolutionary History

ثبت نشده
چکیده

When a group of aligned sequences shows significant similarity to each other, as described in Chapters 4 to 6, this can usually be taken as evidence that they are the result of divergent evolution from a common ancestral sequence. In this case, the sequence alignment will contain traces of the evolutionary history of these sequences. It is possible to infer this history by complex analysis of a multiple sequence alignment. In this and the following chapter we will describe the ways in which the evolutionary history can be recovered and used to investigate the evolutionary relationships between present-day sequences.

The infinite sites model of genome evolution.

We formalize the problem of recovering the evolutionary history of a set of genomes that are related to an unseen common ancestor genome by operations of speciation, deletion, insertion, duplication, and rearrangement of segments of bases. The problem is examined in the limit as the number of bases in each genome goes to infinity. In this limit, the chromosomes are represented by continuous cir...

Objective Determination of Star Formation Histories

Objective determination of a star formation history from a colourmagnitude diagram, independently of assumed parametric descriptions, is necessary to determine the evolutionary history of a galaxy. We introduce a new method for solving maximum likelihood problems through variational calculus, and apply it to the case of recovering an unknown star formation history, SFR(t), from a colour-magnitu...

The Lobbying, Bribery, and Compliance: An Evolutionary Model of Social Factors

Abstract Connecting to rule-makers in order to set favorable rules (lobbying) or paying government executives to bend the current rule (bribing) are the two main strategies for influencing government. This study in an evolutionary game model explain why bribing may become widespread while other states like compliance and cooperative lobbying are Pareto superior. The theoretical model is used ...

Genetic implications of bottleneck effects of differing severities on genetic diversity in naturally recovering populations: An example from Hawaiian coot and Hawaiian gallinule

The evolutionary trajectory of populations through time is influenced by the interplay of forces (biological, evolutionary, and anthropogenic) acting on the standing genetic variation. We used microsatellite and mitochondrial loci to examine the influence of population declines, of varying severity, on genetic diversity within two Hawaiian endemic waterbirds, the Hawaiian coot and Hawaiian gall...

Appraisal of the evolutionary-based methodologies in generation of artificial earthquake time histories

Through the last three decades different seismological and engineering approaches for the generation of artificial earthquakes have been proposed. Selection of an appropriate method for the generation of applicable artificial earthquake accelerograms (AEAs) has been a challenging subject in the time history analysis of the structures in the case of the absence of sufficient recorded accelerogra...
